Delhi gate in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra may be in danger of demolition
Delhi gate in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra may be in danger of demolition as per newspaper reports. The 16th century gateway is not a protected monument, and it is learnt that the authorities are considering its demolition to reduce traffic congestion. The ASI had written to the authorities that though the gateway was not a protected monument, it was an important heritage structure and should be protected. The Department of Conservation, School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi had undertaken an Urban Conservation studion excercise on the heritage resources of Ahmednagar between January to May 2018. Based on the surveys conducted, the Delhi and Malivada Gate were found to be of Grade 1 A heritage significance. Though not monuments of national or state important, such heritage structures are of great historical importance. They give the city an identity and provide continuity in the historical character of our country. Alternative solutions could be considered to reduce congestion and integrate the gateways in the city development plan.
